Man charged over fires targeting properties linked to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer

A Ukrainian man has been charged with three counts of arson for fires that targeted two properties and a car linked to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The Metropolitan Police force said Roman Lavrynovych, 21, who was arrested Tuesday, was charged with arson with intent to endanger life. The charges are linked to three incidents over the past week — a car fire last Thursday, a blaze on Monday at Starmer's private home that damaged the door of the house, and a fire on Sunday outside a north London house converted into apartments connected to the UK leader. No injuries were reported from any of the fires. Police forensics officers near the London home of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on May 12, 2025. Russia-Ukraine peace talks end after less than 2 hours with deal to swap POWs

The first direct Russia-Ukraine peace talks since the early weeks of Moscow's 2022 invasion ended after less than two hours on Friday, and while both sides agreed on a large prisoner swap, they clearly remained far apart on key conditions for ending the fighting. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he discussed the results of the talks with US President Donald Trump and the leaders of France, Germany, the UK and Poland. In a post on X from a European leadership meeting in Albania, he urged "tough sanctions" against Moscow if it rejects "a full and unconditional ceasefire and an end to killings". At the brief Istanbul talks, Kyiv and Moscow agreed to exchange 1000 prisoners of war each, according to the heads of both delegations, in what would be their biggest such swap...

Pope Leo XIV celebrates first Mass as pope and calls his election both a cross and a blessing

Pope Leo XIV, history's first US-born pontiff, said on Friday that his election was both a cross to bear and a blessing as he celebrated his first Mass as the head of the Catholic Church. Leo spoke off-the-cuff in English in the Sistine Chapel to the cardinals who elected him to follow in the footsteps of Pope Francis, who put a commitment to social justice at the core of his papacy. He acknowledged the great responsibility they had placed on him before delivering a brief but dense homily on the need to joyfully spread Christianity in a world that often mocks it. As US and China begin trade talks in Geneva, Trump’s tariff hammer looks less mighty than he hoped

The way US President Donald Trump sees it, beating China in a trade war should be easy. After all, his logic goes, the Chinese sell Americans three times as much stuff as Americans sell them. Therefore, they have more to lose. Inflict enough pain – like the combined 145 per cent taxes he slapped on Chinese imports last month – and they'll beg for mercy. Trump's treasury secretary, Scott Bessent has confidently compared Beijing to a card player stuck with a losing hand. "They're playing with a pair of twos,'' he said. Trump floats raising taxes on the rich to pay for his sweeping tax and spending cuts package

President Donald Trump said he's open to hiking taxes on wealthy Americans to help pay for Republicans' sweeping tax and spending cuts package, but the idea remains hotly contested among GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill. In a Truth Social post Friday morning, Trump said that he would "graciously accept" even a "TINY" tax increase on the rich, while acknowledging that it could bring political risks for Republicans. House GOP lawmakers have been struggling to find $US1.5 trillion ($2.3 trillion) in spending cuts to help offset trillions of dollars of tax reductions. Pakistan says India fired missiles at three air bases inside country. Pakistani retaliation underway

India fired missiles at three air bases inside Pakistan but most of the missiles were intercepted, Pakistan's army spokesman said Saturday. It's the latest escalation in a conflict triggered by a gun massacre last month that India blames Pakistan for. State-run Pakistan Television immediately said retaliatory attacks were underway targeting "multiple locations in India" and the country's military added that the targets were an Indian missile storage facility and airbases in Pathankot and Udhampur.
