‘Big, fat slob’: Feathers fly as Trump pardons Thanksgiving turkeys

US President Donald Trump has pardoned two Thanksgiving turkeys at the White House in characteristic style, slipping in digs at his political rivals such as predecessor Joe Biden. This year's turkey pardon, a presidential tradition dating back decades and which has been de rigeur since 1989, saw Trump wield his clemency powers to spare the lives of Waddle and Gobble and save them from the Thanksgiving table. Only Gobble was present for the ceremony itself, though Waddle made an earlier appearance in the White House briefing room alongside press secretary Karoline Leavitt. Judge throws out cases against two of Trump’s political enemies

A US federal judge has dismissed the indictments against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. The judge found that President Donald Trump's appointment of interim US Attorney Lindsey Halligan in Alexandria, Virginia, was invalid. Trump handpicked Halligan for the role amid increasing pressure to bring criminal cases against his political enemies, including Comey and James. Former FBI director James Comey. (AP) "The Attorney General's attempt to install Ms Halligan as Interim US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia was invalid," Judge Cameron McGowan Currie wrote in her Monday order. According to Currie, "all actions flowing from Ms Halligan's defective appointment" including the indictments against Comey and Jame...

The Epstein files: What can we expect to learn once they are released?

US President Donald Trump called the Epstein files a "Democratic hoax" for months, but now his Justice Department has been ordered to publicly release them - and it's just his signature that stands in the way. But what does that actually mean, and what comes next in the Jeffrey Epstein saga? The US House of Representatives voted 427-1 in favour of publicly releasing all Justice Department investigative files into the convicted sex offender on Tuesday (US time). US President Donald Trump's Justice Department has been ordered to release the so-called Epstein Files. (CNN) Just hours later, the Senate unanimously agreed to pass the bill. Trump, who railed against releasing the Epstein files before suddenly changing his tune this week, said he would sign the bill if...

The controversial ex-cop who was the only ‘no’ in the Epstein vote

Both Democrats and Republicans readied for a unanimous vote this morning to pass a bill that would force a release of the case files relating to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. But in the end, one man stood alone in opposition: Republican Representative Clay Higgins. Higgins, who is in his fifth term representing a congressional district in south-west Louisiana, explained in a lengthy statement that he was "a principled 'NO' on this bill from the beginning". US house passes bill to end historic government shutdown, sending measure to Trump

The House passed a bill to end the US's longest government shutdown, sending the measure to US President Donald Trump for his signature after a historic 43-day funding lapse that saw federal workers go without multiple paychecks, travellers stranded at airports and people lining up at food banks to get a meal for their families. House lawmakers made their long-awaited return to the nation's capital this week after nearly eight weeks away. Republicans used their slight majority to pass the bill with a mostly party-line vote of 222-209. House Democrats expressed great scepticism that the Senate effort would lead to a breakthrough. (Nine) The Senate has already passed the measure. Democrats wanted to extend an enhanced tax credit that expires at the end of t...

White House pressuring Republicans not to vote on releasing Epstein files

Top Trump administration officials have met with a key GOP lawmaker about an effort in the US House to force a vote on releasing Justice Department case files related to Jeffrey Epstein, according to multiple sources familiar with the meeting. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt acknowledged the meeting later Wednesday when asked about reporting that administration officials were huddling with GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert. "Doesn't that show the level of transparency when we are willing to sit down with members of Congress and address their concerns?" she told reporters at the press briefing. In spite of their reputations as Trump acolytes, Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene said they will vote to release the Epstein files. (AP) Leavitt added: "I'm not go...
