US military action in Venezuela is seen as both a blessing and a curse for Russia’s Putin

The lightning US operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro can be seen as both a benefit and a burden for Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose forces botched an attempt to capture Ukraine's capital and topple its leader at the start of Moscow's invasion nearly four years ago. The ouster of Maduro highlights another Kremlin failure to support an ally, following the downfall of Syria's former President Bashar Assad in 2024 and last year's US and Israeli attacks on Iran. With the US determined to establish control over Venezuela, Russia stands to lose a strategic foothold in the Western Hemisphere, along with billions of dollars invested in its oil industry. US seizes Russian-flagged oil tanker linked to Venezuela

The US says it has seized two sanctioned oil tankers linked to Venezuela after in back-to-back actions in the North Atlantic and the Caribbean, officials said on Wednesday. Originally called the Bella 1, the tanker was sanctioned by the US in 2024 for operating within a "shadow fleet" of tankers transporting illicit oil. US European Command announced the seizure of the merchant vessel Bella 1 for "violations of US sanctions". A Coast Guard cutter had pursued the tanker into the waters between Scotland and Iceland after it tried to avoid being ensnared by the US blockade on sanctioned oil vessels around Venezuela. The vessel tanker Bella 1 at Singapore Strait, after US officials say the Coast Guard pursued an oil tanker in international waters near Venezuela, in this pi...

Trump says US to get up to 50 million barrels of oil from Venezuela at market price

President Donald Trump said “interim authorities” in Venezuela would sell between 30 million and 50 million barrels of “high quality” oil to the US at its market price. “I have asked Energy Secretary Chris Wright to execute this plan, immediately,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “It will be taken by storage ships, and brought directly to unloading docks in the United States.” Trump said the money would be controlled by him as president, but would be used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States. Multiple explosions in Venezuelan capital Caracas

Venezuela's government has accused the United States of attacking civilian and military installations in multiple states after at least seven explosions and low-flying aircraft were heard in the capital, Caracas. The Pentagon referred requests for comment to the White House, which has not yet commented. The Federal Aviation Authority banned US commercial flights in Venezuela airspace over "ongoing military activity" ahead of explosions in Caracas, which began about 1.50am on Saturday (5.50pm AEDT). "One was so strong, my window was shaking after it," CNN correspondent Osmary Hernandez said. People in various neighbourhoods rushed to the streets. Venezuela denounces Trump’s order for ship blockade as ‘warmongering threats’

Getty Images US President Donald Trump has ordered "a total and complete" blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela - a move denounced by Caracas as "warmongering threats". Trump wrote that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro's government had been designated a foreign terrorist organisation (FTO), which had also engaged in "Drug Smuggling, and Human Trafficking". His remarks come after the US seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela last week, a significant action in light of the South American nation's reliance on oil. The US has also recently conducted deadly strikes on alleged Venezuelan drug-smuggling boats, and has significantly built up its naval presence nearby. Trump's post did not give further detail of how the wide-ranging b...

US seizure of oil tanker off Venezuela about ‘regime change’: senator

President Donald Trump has said the US has seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela as tensions mount with the government of President Nicolás Maduro. Using US forces to take control of a merchant ship is incredibly unusual and marks the Trump administration's latest push to increase pressure on Maduro, who has been charged with narcoterrorism in the US. The US has built up the largest military presence in the region in decades and launched a series of deadly strikes on alleged drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean. The campaign is facing growing scrutiny from Congress. The US is ramping up military pressure on the South American country.
