Trump threatens tolls as US denies Iran’s Strait of Hormuz closure

US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose American tolls on the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran declared the crucial waterway closed once again overnight - already threatening the interim agreement to end the war. The Iranian joint military command said the strait was shut in response to ongoing Israeli attacks in Lebanon, and said while its negotiators are going to Switzerland for talks, not much is likely to happen there. The Strait of Hormuz has been closed again. Getty Key mediator Pakistan, meanwhile, said the technical-level talks will begin on Sunday in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, with Qatari mediators also participating. In Tehran’s first salvo, Iran’s joint military command said the strait had been closed, citing the Israeli attacks and US “bad faith” and “clear ...

Donald Trump manipulating markets with Iran war claims, says senator

A top US senator has levelled a remarkable accusation against Donald Trump. Yesterday the US president declared he would resume strikes against Iran, causing markets to drop around the world. But Hawaii Democrat Brian Schatz was suspicious. Donald Trump's comments on Iran have fluctuating wildly on a day-by-day basis. AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin “I think the war hasn’t really stopped. I think he tries to manipulate markets, to say that a deal is imminent,” the senator said. “And there’s no real evidence that a deal is imminent.” And hours after declaring an attack on Iran was imminent, Trump overnight backed down. “Based on the fact that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and appr...

Donald Trump loses Iran war resolution vote in stinging rebuke

Donald Trump could be forced to withdraw from the Iran war after a crucial vote in the US House of Representatives. The Iran war powers resolution would end the war or force the president to get approval from Congress to continue it. Another six Republicans did not vote. The resolution is a stinging rebuke to Trump, especially given enough of his own party members were willing to vote against him. There were cheers in the House as the resolution passed. “A majority of Americans are sick and tired of this president’s reckless warmongering,” Democratic Congressma...

Iran says draft deal with US would reopen Hormuz shipping, end naval blockade

Iran's state TV says it has obtained a draft of an initial, unofficial framework for a memorandum of understanding with the US on ending their conflict. Under the framework, Iran would restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz to pre-war levels within a month, while the US would withdraw military forces from Iran's vicinity and lift a naval blockade. State TV said the framework, which excludes military vessels and envisages Iran managing ship traffic through the strait in cooperation with Oman, was not yet finalised and that Tehran would take no steps without "tangible verification". Trump says US to ‘guide’ stranded ships through Strait of Hormuz

AFP via Getty Images The United States says it will on Monday begin trying to free merchant ships stranded by Iran's closure of the key shipping channel, the Strait of Hormuz, since the start of the war. US President Donald Trump said "Project Freedom" was a "humanitarian gesture" and that any interference would "be dealt with forcefully". Some 15,000 US service personnel, guided-missile destroyers and more than 100 aircraft would be involved, US Central Command (Centcom) said, adding that the US blockade of Iranian ports would continue. The move comes as the two countries observe a temporary ceasefire, which began on 8 April, and as they work on agreeing on a permanent peace plan. However a senior Iranian official warned that any US attempt to interfere in the str...

Iran offers to reopen Strait of Hormuz if US lifts its blockade and the war ends, officials say

Iran has offered to end its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the US lifting its blockade on the country and an end to the war, while proposing that discussions on the larger question of its nuclear program would come in a later phase, two regional officials say. US President Donald Trump seems unlikely to accept the offer, which was passed to the Americans by Pakistan and would leave unresolved the disagreements that led the US and Israel to go to war on February 28. With a fragile ceasefire in place, the US and Iran are locked in a standoff over the strait, through which a fifth of the world's traded oil and gas passes in peacetime. The US blockade is designed to prevent Iran from selling its oil, depriving it of crucial revenue while also potentially creating...
