US military action in Venezuela is seen as both a blessing and a curse for Russia’s Putin

The lightning US operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro can be seen as both a benefit and a burden for Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose forces botched an attempt to capture Ukraine's capital and topple its leader at the start of Moscow's invasion nearly four years ago. The ouster of Maduro highlights another Kremlin failure to support an ally, following the downfall of Syria's former President Bashar Assad in 2024 and last year's US and Israeli attacks on Iran. With the US determined to establish control over Venezuela, Russia stands to lose a strategic foothold in the Western Hemisphere, along with billions of dollars invested in its oil industry. The widening rift between Trump and Europe is a gift to Putin

US President Donald Trump's emissaries to the Kremlin may have been spinning their wheels during talks last week in Moscow on a possible Ukraine peace deal, but the Russians can now press a new advantage: the deepening divisions between Washington and Europe. Overnight, Trump doubled down on his administration's criticism of Europe, saying in a newly published interview with Politico that European nations were "weak" and "decaying" because of their immigration policies. He also argued that Russia had the "upper hand" in its war on Ukraine and that it was time for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to "start accepting things" when it comes to efforts to end the conflict. US President Donald Trump is interviewed by Politico about the state of Europe amid the Russia-U...

Ukraine and Russia’s intensifying energy war brings gas shortages and economic pain

Almost 900 miles from Ukraine's borders, a fire erupted at a Russian oil refinery on Saturday. The blaze – a result of a strike by Ukrainian long-range drones, according to sources in the country's security services – was the third at the facility in the last month alone. It was just the latest episode in an intensifying energy war between Ukraine and Russia. Video from the area around the Ufa refinery in Bashkortostan, a Russian region in the southern Ural Mountains, showed a column of dark smoke rising from the plant following the attack. The refinery is one of the country's largest. This was at least the fourth Ukrainian attack on Russian oil facilities in the last week, continuing a campaign that accelerated over the summer and has led to gasoline sho...

Romania condemns ‘irresponsible’ Moscow after Russian drone breaches its airspace

Romania has condemned Moscow's "irresponsible actions" after alleging that a Russian drone breached Romanian airspace during an attack on neighbouring Ukraine, prompting Bucharest to scramble fighter jets. The Russian drone used in attacks on Ukraine entered Romanian airspace at 6.05pm on Saturday (1.05am Sunday AEST), according to Romania's defence ministry. The incident comes days after Poland shot down Russian drones that had violated its airspace – prompting NATO allies to pledge to beef up defences on the alliance's eastern flank. Trump demands NATO countries stop buying Russian oil

US President Donald Trump says he believes the Russia-Ukraine war would end if all NATO countries stopped buying oil from Russia and placed tariffs on China of 50 per cent to 100 per cent for its purchases of Russian petroleum. Trump posted on his social media site that NATO's commitment to winning the war "has been far less" than 100 per cent and the purchase of Russian oil by some members of the alliance is "shocking." As if speaking with NATO members, he said on Saturday: "It greatly weakens your negotiating position, and bargaining power, over Russia". NATO warplanes scrambled amid Russian drone attacks on Ukraine

NATO fighter jets have been sent to Romania's border after a Russian drone strike landed dangerously close to its territory. The two German warplanes were deployed in the early hours of Wednesday to secure Romanian airspace when Russia launched nearly 93 drones and two ballistic missiles against Ukraine. Ukrainian officials said the Russian attacks targeted industrial sites in the city of Izmail on the Danube river, at the border with Romania - which is a NATO member.
