Trump says US to ‘guide’ stranded ships through Strait of Hormuz

AFP via Getty Images The United States says it will on Monday begin trying to free merchant ships stranded by Iran's closure of the key shipping channel, the Strait of Hormuz, since the start of the war. US President Donald Trump said "Project Freedom" was a "humanitarian gesture" and that any interference would "be dealt with forcefully". Some 15,000 US service personnel, guided-missile destroyers and more than 100 aircraft would be involved, US Central Command (Centcom) said, adding that the US blockade of Iranian ports would continue. The move comes as the two countries observe a temporary ceasefire, which began on 8 April, and as they work on agreeing on a permanent peace plan. However a senior Iranian official warned that any US attempt to interfere in the str...

As tensions escalate in the Strait of Hormuz after US and Iran both fire at ships

The Strait of Hormuz was on lockdown on Monday after a tense weekend in which Iran was accused of attacking two Indian-flagged vessels and the U.S. Marines fired at and seized an Iranian-flagged ship. The escalating tensions over the vital passage for oil and international trade came amid a U.S. naval blockade of the strait and Iran's declaration on Sunday that it had closed the waterway after briefly reopening it. The heightening hostilities over the strait are occurring as Iran announced it will not send negotiators to Pakistan for a second round of peace talks with their U.S. counterparts, including Vice President JD Vance. US war with Iran hints at limits of ‘Make Europe Great Again’ project, analysts say

President Donald Trump's announcement of a joint U.S.-Israeli surprise attack on Iran in February was met with little enthusiasm in Europe, where leaders were quick to warn of the political and economic turmoil that America's latest Middle East campaign would unleash. Seven weeks on, no European nations have joined the U.S.-Israeli war, despite near-constant pressure from Trump to do so. Some European nations have allowed U.S. forces to continue using key military bases to launch attacks and have taken part in defensive operations to shoot down Iranian munitions targeting regional bases and nations. But there appears to be little appetite for a full and open-ended entanglement with Iran among European voters, even those who support the nationalist, anti-establishment parties that have so...

Suspects charged in alleged terror plot cited ISIS and may have tried to replicate Paris terror attack on US soil, FBI says

Two men face federal charges for allegedly plotting an ISIS-inspired Halloween attack in the US – possibly on the scale of the 2015 Paris terror attacks that killed at least 130 people, authorities say. An FBI raid on Halloween morning stunned neighbors in Dearborn, the second-safest city in Michigan and home to the highest concentration of Arab Americans in the US. Mohmed Ali and Majed Mahmoud face charges of "receiving and transferring, and attempting and conspiring to transfer, firearms and ammunition knowing and having reasonable cause to believe that the firearms and ammunition would be used to commit a Federal crime of terrorism," according to a criminal complaint. US warship docks in Trinidad and Tobago, putting more pressure on Venezuela

A US warship has docked in Trinidad and Tobago's capital as the Trump administration boosts military pressure on neighbouring Venezuela and its President Nicolás Maduro. The arrival of the USS Gravely, a guided missile destroyer, in the capital of the Caribbean nation is in addition to the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R Ford, which is moving closer to Venezuela. Maduro criticised the movement of the carrier as an attempt by the US government to fabricate "a new eternal war" against his country. The USS Gravely destroyer prepares to dock for military exercises in Port-of-Spain, in Trinidad and Tobago. NYC Mayor Eric Adams charged with taking bribes and illegal campaign funds from foreign sources

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted on charges that he took illegal campaign contributions and bribes from foreign nationals in exchange for favours that included helping Turkish officials get fire safety approvals for a new diplomatic building in the city. Adams, a former police officer, faces conspiracy, wire fraud and bribery charges in a five-count indictment that describes a decade-long trail of crimes. The US attorney's office in Manhattan alleges in the indictment that Adams "not only accepted, but sought illegal campaign contributions" to his mayoral campaign. A senior official in the Turkish diplomatic establishment "facilitated many straw donations" to Adams and arranged for Adams and his companions to receive free or discounted travel on Turkey's nationa...
