French offices of Elon Musk’s X platform raided by Paris cybercrime unit

French police raided the Paris offices of Elon Musk's X on Tuesday and summoned the tech billionaire for questioning as part of a widening probe into the social media company and its AI chatbot Grok. The search was linked to an investigation France opened in January 2025, the prosecutor's office said on Tuesday, adding that its cybercrime unit conducted the raid with help from Europol. Both X chairman Musk and former X chief executive Linda Yaccarino have been summoned to appear at hearings in April, while X employees will be questioned as witnesses, according to the Paris prosecutor. A Paris prosecutor said the investigation, opened in January 2025, was broadened to include "Grok's sexualised deepfakes". (Andrew Harnik/Getty Images via CNN Newsource) Prosecutor Lau...

France in fresh political crisis as PM Lecornu quits after 26 days

France is facing further political chaos after the country's latest prime minister, Sébastien Lecornu, resigned after just 26 days in the role. Hours after quitting, Lecornu accepted a request from French President Emmanuel Macron to work on a plan for the "stability for the country" by Wednesday evening. That unexpected twist capped a day of political upheaval which saw stocks fall sharply on the Paris exchange amid concerns over the political parties' ability to tackle the country's economic woes. Lecornu's shock resignation on Monday morning came the day after he unveiled his cabinet, and made him the third French PM to leave office since last December. His ministerial line-up had been fiercely criticised across the board by parties in the National Assembly, which threatened...

France’s top court strikes down pesticide clause in farming law

France’s highest court on Thursday blocked a key part of a contentious farming law that would have brought back a banned pesticide. The court said that the measure failed to protect the environment and future generations. The rest of the law — known as the “Duplomb law,” after the senator who proposed it — was allowed to stand. The bill, passed in early July, aimed to loosen rules for farmers and fast-track projects like water storage. It was backed by the government and major farming unions, but met fierce opposition from scientists, health experts and green groups. At the heart of the outrage was acetamiprid, a pesticide banned in France since 2018 for its role in harming bees and other pollinators. Farmers, especially sugar beet growers, had pushed for its return. But the court rule...
