Angelina Jolie alleges ‘history’ of Brad Pitt’s physical abuse prior to 2016 plane ride in new Miraval lawsuit filing

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s fight over the French winery they once owned together is coming to a head and reigniting older conflicts, as new legal documents allege a “history of physical abuse of Jolie” on the part of Pitt prior to their fateful plane ride in 2016. On Thursday, Jolie filed a motion with the Los Angeles Superior Court, a copy of which CNN has obtained, wherein she claims that she attempted to sell Pitt her stake in the Miraval winery and that their negotiations ultimately broke down after Pitt conditioned the sale on Jolie signing an NDA that “prohibited Jolie from speaking (other than in court) about Pitt’s abuse of Jolie and their children by attempting to tie Pitt’s personal reputation to Miraval’s business.” This week’s new filing stems from Pitt’s 2022 lawsuit, in...

France to ban smoking on beaches and public parks

France will ban smoking on beaches and public parks, the country's health minister said, presenting a series of measures as the government looks to prevent 75,000 tobacco-related deaths per year. The measures - part of a government plan to combat smoking - aim to create a "tobacco-free generation by 2032." Speaking at a press conference, French Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau said smoking on beaches, public parks, forests and some other public spaces, including close to schools, will soon be banned in France. The minister did not give an exact timeline but speaking to CNN-affiliate BFMTV, he hinted that people could face fines as early as next year. Rousseau also announced a gradual price increase for cigarettes, saying that a packet would cost 12 euros ($19) in...

French suburbs are burning. How a teen’s killing is focusing anger over police tactics

The fatal police shooting of a 17-year-old outside Paris this week has set off widespread disorder in French suburbs, with protesters burning cars, garbage and buildings. The killing also has raised questions about whether France has failed to move on since it was wracked by weeks of urban rioting in 2005. The shooting of the teen, identified as Nahel, was captured on video and shocked the country. It stirred up long-simmering tensions between police and young people in disadvantaged neighborhoods. It also prompted calls for a thorough overhaul of the conditions governing the use of weapons by police. SHOOTINGS ON THE RISE Thirteen people were killed in police shootings last year after not complying with orders during traffic stops, according to police. This year, three people, inc...
