Donald Trump appears to mix up Greenland and Iceland four times

Donald Trump appeared to repeatedly mistake Iceland for Greenland in his speech to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland overnight.
In his speech, the president referenced Iceland four times in a context that seemed to fit his previous remarks on Greenland.
“I’m helping Europe, I am helping NATO, and until the last few days when I told them about Iceland, they loved me,” he said.
'Trump always chickens out' is a common expression on Wall Street.

“(NATO is) not there for us on Iceland, that I can tell you. Our stock market took the first dip yesterday because of Iceland.
“So Iceland’s already cost us a lot of money.”
He made the same apparent mistake yesterday in a long press conference.
But White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt rebuked a reporter for pointing out the gaffe.
“His written remarks referred to Greenland as a ‘piece of ice’ because that’s what it is,” Leavitt wrote on X.
“You’re the only one mixing anything up here.”

While both are large islands in the Atlantic, one is a Danish territory and the other is its own nation.
In the speech, Trump also scolded world leaders and appeared to take credit for winning World War II.
“Without us, right now you’d all be speaking German,” Trump told the crowd.
Davos is a German-speaking town in Switzerland, which did not participate in World War II.

He also mocked Denmark for how quickly it was overwhelmed by the Germans in the war.
Trump also interrupted his remarks to comment on French President Emmanuel Macron wearing sunglasses during his speech earlier this week.
“I watched him yesterday with those beautiful sunglasses,” Trump said.
“What the hell happened?”
Macron had burst a blood vessel in his eye earlier this month, a condition he called benign but “unsightly”.

Democratic congressman Jim McGovern mocked the president after the speech.
“I think it’s time to take the keys away from grandpa,” he said.
“He doesn’t seem like he’s all there.”
