Trump signs executive order to dismantle the US Education Department

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order calling for the dismantling of the federal Education Department, advancing a campaign promise to take apart an agency that's been a longtime target of conservatives. Trump has derided the Education Department as wasteful and polluted by liberal ideology. However, completing its dismantling is most likely impossible without an act of Congress, which created the department in 1979. Republicans said they will introduce a bill to achieve that. The department, however, is not set to close completely. The White House said the department will retain certain critical functions. First plane lands at London’s Heathrow since closure, Qantas flights diverted to Paris after fire cuts power to Europe’s business airport

The first plane landed at Heathrow Airport late on Friday, about 18 hours after an inferno at an electrical substation caused a power outage that shuttered Europe's busiest air travel hub. The British Airways jet touched down just before sunset after Heathrow lifted its closure order that disrupted global travel for hundreds of thousands of passengers. At least 1350 flights to and from Heathrow were affected, flight tracking service FlightRadar 24 said, and the impact was likely to last several days as passengers try to reschedule their travel and airlines work to reposition aircraft and crews. People watch a British Airways plane landing as authorities announced a partial resumption of flights after a fire at a nearby electrical substation has caused a closure o...

Eyeing China threat, Trump announces Boeing wins contract for secretive future fighter jet

US President Donald Trump has announced Boeing will build the Air Force's future fighter jet, which the Pentagon says will have stealth and penetration capabilities that far exceed those of its current fleet and is essential in a potential conflict with China. Known as Next Generation Air Dominance, or NGAD, the manned jet will serve as quarterback to a fleet of future drone aircraft designed to be able to penetrate the air defences of China and any other potential foes. The initial contract to proceed with production on a version for the Air Force is worth an estimated $US20 billion ($AU31 billion). The 47th president, who announced the award at the White House with Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Air Force leadership, said with a grin that the new fighter would be named th...

Canada and EU swiftly retaliate against Trump’s steel and aluminium tariffs

Major trade partners have swiftly hit back at US President Donald Trump's increased tariffs on aluminium and steel imports, imposing stiff new taxes on US goods including products from textiles and water heaters to beef and bourbon. Canada, the largest steel supplier to the US said on Wednesday (early Thursday AEDT) it would place 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs on steel products and also raise taxes on a host of items: tools, computers and servers, display monitors, sports equipment, and cast-iron products. US official labels Australia a ‘dumper’ of aluminium as tariff fallout continues

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has labelled Australia as a "dumper" of under-priced aluminium as domestic politicians scramble to push for an exemption on steel and aluminium tariffs. "You've got dumpers in the rest of the world. Japan dumps steel, China dumps steel," he told Fox Business. "We're going to stop that nonsense and bring steel here. "We're not going to stand for China dumping, Japan dumping, Australia does a lot of aluminium at below cost." Trump refused to grant Australia an exemption. (Getty) Lutnick said Trump was "protecting America". Australia's steel and aluminium exports to the US amount to about 0.2 per cent of the national total export value. This morning, opposition leader Peter Dutton promised to "get a deal done" with U...

The Arctic is in trouble. The consequences will be felt around the world

The Arctic has long filled humans with awe, but there are now profoundly worrying signals coming from the frozen landscape at the top of our planet, and scientists are deeply concerned about its future as the Trump administration pulls the US out of global climate strategy and guts its science agencies. Last month was extreme: Temperatures in parts of the Arctic spiked 20 Celsius above normal. By the end of the month, sea ice was at its lowest level ever recorded for February, marking the third straight month of record lows. This follows a year of concerning signs from the region, including intense wildfires and thawing permafrost pumping out planet-heating pollution. Icebergs drift in calm seas off the Greenland coast.
