Australian ambassador to return to Kyiv at critical point in Russia’s war on Ukraine

Australia's ambassador will return to Kyiv next month, almost three years after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine prompted the embassy's evacuation. The announcement by Foreign Minister Penny Wong on her first visit to Ukraine since the unprovoked assault, followed repeated calls from Ukraine, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to relocate Canberra's diplomatic representatives from Poland. The visit and reopening came at what Wong called "such an important time for your country and for the future of your people", amid huge uncertainty about what impact US President-elect Donald Trump will have on the war. Nato must switch to a wartime mindset, warns secretary general

The head of Nato has said it is time to "shift to a wartime mindset", as he warned the military alliance's members were not spending enough to prepare for the threat of a future conflict with Russia. Secretary general Mark Rutte said Moscow was "preparing for long-term confrontation with Ukraine and with us", describing the current security situation as the worst in his lifetime. "We are not ready for what is coming our way in four to five years," he said in his first major speech since becoming secretary general in October, urging members to "turbocharge" their defence spending. His comments come weeks before president-elect Donald Trump takes office, having previously suggested the US would not protect Nato allies that were failing to spend enough on defence. Reut...

Donald Trump named Time’s Person of the Year and rings New York Stock Exchange opening bell

US President-elect Donald Trump rang the opening bell on Thursday at the New York Stock Exchange after being recognised for the second time by Time magazine as its person of the year. The honours for the businessman-turned-politician are a measure of Trump's remarkable comeback from an ostracised former president who refused to accept his election loss four years ago to a president-elect who won the White House decisively in November. Before he rang the opening bell at 9.30am (1.30am on Friday AEDT), a first for him, Trump spoke at the exchange and called it "a tremendous honour". Donald Trump named Time's 2024 Person of the Year. Biden commutes about 1500 sentences, pardons 39 people in biggest single-day act of clemency

US President Joe Biden is commuting the sentences of about 1500 people who were released from prison and placed on home confinement during the coronavirus pandemic and is pardoning 39 Americans convicted of nonviolent crimes. It's the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history. The commutations announced on Thursday are for people who have served out home confinement sentences for at least one year after they were released. Prisons were uniquely bad for spreading the virus and some inmates were released in part to stop the spread. At one point, one in five prisoners had COVID-19, according to a tally kept by The Associated Press. Biden said he would be taking more steps in the weeks ahead and would continue to review clemency petitions. The second largest single-day a...
