Passengers in upside-down crash landing offered $46,000 each

Delta Air Lines is offering US$30,000 ($46,847) to the passengers involved in a flight that crashed, turned upside down, and caught fire at Toronto Airport earlier this week, an airline spokesperson told CNN. "Delta Care Team representatives are telling customers this gesture has no strings attached and does not affect rights," said Morgan Durrant, a spokesperson for the airline. If all 76 passengers involved took the money, it would add up to a little over US$2.2 million ($3.44 million). The passenger plane ended up upside down. Vincent Genova, of law firm Rochon Genova, said the offer was me...

What do Trump’s executive orders say on tariffs and how would they work?

With a trio of executive orders, US President Donald Trump has almost instantly thrown the world economy and his own goal of cutting inflation into turmoil. His tariffs against Canada and Mexico in order to stop illegal immigration and the illicit fentanyl trade led to retaliatory taxes by both countries on US imports. He placed an additional 10 per cent tariff on imports from China with the stated goal of stopping the production of fentanyl. A trade war is looming between the US, Canada, and Mexico. (AP) But on a deeper level, Trump suddenly hit the US economy with tax increases that, if sustained, could total more than US$1 trillion ($1.61 trillion) in 10 years. He did so without congressional approval and by his own acknowledgement at the perilous chance of ...

Canada’s finance minister resigns as unpopular Trudeau faces biggest test of his political career

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faces the biggest test of his political career after Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, long one of his most powerful and loyal ministers, announced Monday that she was resigning from the Cabinet. The stunning move raised questions about how much longer the prime minister of nearly 10 years can stay on as his administration scrambles to deal with incoming US President-elect Donald Trump. Trudeau's popularity has plummeted due to concerns about inflation and immigration. Opposition leader Jagmeet Singh, whose party Trudeau's ruling Liberals have relied upon to stay in power, called on Trudeau to resign. The main opposition Conservatives demanded an election. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accompanied by Canada's Mini...

Is Trump right to point the finger at China over the fentanyl crisis?

Donald Trump has threatened to impose sweeping tariffs on China and other countries for failing to stem shipments of drugs to the US. This week, the US president-elect announced he would be slapping 25 per cent tariffs on imports from China, Mexico and Canada when he assumes power. But Trump went a step further with China, singling out the emerging superpower for its role in the US opioid crisis, which is killing thousands of Americans every year. Donald Trump led Republicans to a clean sweep of the House, Senate and the White House. (AP) In a post on his Truth Social site, he said he wants to impose an "an additional 10 per cent tariff" on imports from China until the flow of illicit drugs, particularly fentanyl, dries up. Trump said he has "had many tal...
Airline worker among six arrested in $25 million airport gold heist. Police say it was an inside job

Airline worker among six arrested in $25 million airport gold heist. Police say it was an inside job

Six people have been arrested in last year's multimillion-dollar gold heist at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, police in Canada and the US said on Wednesday. Police have also issued arrest warrants for three others in what they described as an "inside job." All nine suspects have been charged with over 19 counts. On April 17, 2023, an air cargo container carrying more than $22 million Canadian dollars' ($25 million) worth of gold bars and foreign currency was stolen from a secure storage facility using fake paperwork, police say. The gold and currency had just arrived on an Air Canada flight from Zurich, Switzerland. At least two former Air Canada employees allegedly helped in the audacious theft, police say. One is now in custody and an arrest warrant ...

More presumed human remains recovered from submersible that imploded, killing 5, Coast Guard says

The Coast Guard has recovered remaining debris, including presumed human remains, from a submersible that imploded on its way to explore the wreck of the Titanic, killing all five onboard, deep beneath the Atlantic Ocean’s surface, officials said Tuesday. The Coast Guard said that the recovery and transfer of remaining parts was completed last Wednesday, and a photo showed the intact aft titanium endcap of the 22-foot (6.7-meter) vessel. Additional presumed human remains were carefully recovered from within Titan’s debris and transported for analysis by U.S. medical professionals, the Coast Guard said. The salvage mission conducted under an agreement with the U.S. Navy was a follow-up to initial recovery operations on the ocean floor roughly 1,600 feet (488 meters) away from the Tita...
