Supreme Court rejects Trump’s bid to delay sentencing in his New York hush money case

A sharply divided Supreme Court rejected President-elect Donald Trump's final bid to put his New York hush-money case on hold, clearing the way for him to be sentenced for felony crimes days before he returns to the presidency. The court's 5-4 order allows Judge Juan M. Merchan to impose a sentence on Friday on Trump, who was convicted in what prosecutors called an attempt to cover up a US$130,000 (A$209,000) hush money payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels. Trump has denied any liaison with Daniels or any wrongdoing. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined with the court's three liberals in rejecting his emergency motion. Rudy Giuliani must give control of luxury items and Manhattan apartment to Georgia election workers he defamed, judge rules

A US federal judge has ordered former Donald Trump attorney and New York mayor Rudy Giuliani to turn over all his valuable possessions and his Manhattan penthouse apartment to the control of Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, the Georgia election workers he defamed and to whom he now owes $US150 million ($224 million). Judge Lewis Liman of the federal court in Manhattan said Giuliani must turn over his interest in the property to the women in seven days, to a receivership they will control. The judge's turnover order of the luxury items is swift and simple, but the penthouse apartment will have its control transferred so Freeman and Moss can sell it, potentially for millions of dollars. Trump in court as lawyers fight to overturn verdict in E. Jean Carroll sex abuse suit

Veering from the campaign trail to a courtroom, Donald Trump quietly observed Friday (local time) as his lawyer fought to overturn a verdict finding the former president liable for sexual abuse and defamation. The Republican nominee and his accuser, E. Jean Carroll, a writer, sat at tables about five metres apart, in a Manhattan federal appeals court. Trump didn't acknowledge or look at Carroll as he passed directly in front of her on the way in and out, but he sometimes shook his head, including when Carroll's attorney said he sexually attacked her. Justice Department seeks to revive Trump documents case

Special counsel Jack Smith is arguing to revive his office's classified documents case against Donald Trump with a vigorous defence of its authority in the first formal filing since Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the criminal case last month. In a brief filed with the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta on Monday, Smith argues that Cannon's decision to end the Trump case because the prosecutors' office lacked constitutional authority was "novel" and "lack[ed] merit." Cannon had ruled the Justice Department didn't have the ability to appoint or fund special counsels like Smith.
