Justin Timberlake pleaded guilty to impaired driving on Friday, resolving the criminal case stemming from his June arrest in New York's Hamptons. The boy band singer-turned-solo star and actor appeared in Sag Harbor Village Court to enter a new plea. The judge sentenced Timberlake to a $US500 ($745) fine with a $US260 ($388) surcharge, 25 hours of community service at the nonprofit of his choosing and required him to make a public safety announcement about the dangers of impaired driving. Trump in court as lawyers fight to overturn verdict in E. Jean Carroll sex abuse suit

Veering from the campaign trail to a courtroom, Donald Trump quietly observed Friday (local time) as his lawyer fought to overturn a verdict finding the former president liable for sexual abuse and defamation. The Republican nominee and his accuser, E. Jean Carroll, a writer, sat at tables about five metres apart, in a Manhattan federal appeals court. Trump didn't acknowledge or look at Carroll as he passed directly in front of her on the way in and out, but he sometimes shook his head, including when Carroll's attorney said he sexually attacked her. Justice Department seeks to revive Trump documents case

Special counsel Jack Smith is arguing to revive his office's classified documents case against Donald Trump with a vigorous defence of its authority in the first formal filing since Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the criminal case last month. In a brief filed with the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta on Monday, Smith argues that Cannon's decision to end the Trump case because the prosecutors' office lacked constitutional authority was "novel" and "lack[ed] merit." Cannon had ruled the Justice Department didn't have the ability to appoint or fund special counsels like Smith. Julian Assange pleads guilty in US court

Julian Assange has pleaded guilty to a single felony charge in the courthouse of a remote US territory in the Pacific, ending a decade-plus legal saga over the publication of a trove of classified documents. The plane carrying the WikiLeaks founder to apparent freedom landed in the remote US territory of Saipan in the ocean between Papua New Guinea and Japan shortly before 6.30am, his supporters posted on X, for the final stage of a plea deal reached with the US Justice Department. Assange, clad in a dark suit with a bronze-coloured tie, arrived at the US courthouse in Saipan shortly before 8am AEST (Saipan is in the same timezone as Australia's east coast). US President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, convicted of all three felonies in federal gun trial

Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, could be sentenced just days before the US presidential election after he was convicted of all three felony charges related to the purchase of a revolver in 2018 when, prosecutors argued, he lied on a mandatory gun-purchase form by saying he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs. Jurors on Tuesday (early Wednesday AEST) found Hunter Biden guilty of lying to a federally licensed gun dealer, making a false claim on the application by saying he was not a drug user and illegally having the gun for 11 days. He stared straight ahead and showed little emotion as the verdict was read. After the verdict, he patted his defence attorney on the shoulder. He faces up to 25 years in prison when he is sentenced by Judge Maryellen ...

Judge considers dismissing indictment against Alec Baldwin in fatal shooting of cinematographer

A New Mexico judge is considering Alec Baldwin's request to dismiss a grand jury indictment against him at a virtual court hearing on Friday. The indictment in January charged Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on October 21, 2021, at a movie ranch on the outskirts of Santa Fe. Baldwin, a lead actor and co-producer on the Western Rust, has pleaded not guilty to the charge and his attorneys have urged dismissal. They have argued that prosecutors flouted the rules of grand jury proceedings to divert attention away from exculpatory evidence and witnesses. The involuntary manslaughter charge carries a maximum sentence of one and a half years in prison. During rehearsal, Baldwin was pointing a gun a...
