Judge declines to delay Trump’s New York hush money trial over complaints of pretrial publicity

The judge in Donald Trump's hush money criminal case turned down the former president’s request to postpone his trial because of publicity about the case. It's the latest in a string of delay denials that Trump has gotten from various courts this week as he fights to stave off the trial's start on Monday with jury selection. Among other things, Trump's lawyers had argued that the jury pool was deluged with what the defense saw as “exceptionally prejudicial” news coverage of the case. The defense maintained that was a reason to hold off the case indefinitely. Judge Juan M. Merchan said that idea was “not tenable.” Trump “appears to take the position that his situation and this case are unique and that the pre-trial publicity will never subside. However, this view...

UK court orders delay to extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to US on espionage charges

A British court has ruled that Julian Assange can't immediately be extradited to the US on espionage charges, in a partial victory for the WikiLeaks founder. Two High Court judges said they would grant the Australian a new appeal unless US authorities give further assurances about what will happen to him. The ruling means the legal saga, which has dragged on for more than a decade, will continue. The case has been adjourned until May 20. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. (AP) Judges Victoria Sharp and Jeremy Johnson said that if no assurances are filed by the US, they will grant Assange permission to appeal extradition on grounds including breach of freedom of expression, and because he might receive the death penalty. "If assurances are not given then we...

Donald Trump unable to make $707 million bond in civil fraud case, his lawyers tell court

An insurance broker, Gary Giulietti, who testified for Trump during the civil fraud trial, signed an affidavit stating that securing a bond in the full amount "is a practical impossibility." Potential underwriters are seeking cash to back the bond, not properties, according to Trump's lawyers. Trump's lawyers have asked the appeals court to delay posting the bond until his appeal of the case is over, arguing that the value of Trump's properties far exceed the judgment. If the appeals court rules against him, Trump asked the court to delay his posting the bond until his appeal to New York's highest court is heard. Last month, Trump was ordered to pay $541 million in disgorgement, or "ill-gotten gains," by New York Judge Arthur Engoron in a civil fraud case brought by New York...
