Meta Platforms faces pivotal trial as opening statements begin in California

Opening statements kicked off on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST) in a pivotal trial for Meta Platforms in a California federal court, where states are seeking billions of dollars in damages for social media harms to children. Attorneys general from California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey are seeking a financial penalty that could, in theory, total as much as $US1.4 trillion ($2 trillion) plus changes to how the company operates Facebook and Instagram. The United States will open a formal investigation into the European Union’s trade practices, US President Donald Trump said on Friday, claiming the bloc has unfairly levied billions of dollars of fines against Google, Apple and other US tech giants. The Republican president made the announcement a day after the EU hit Google with a fine of €890 million ($1.5 billion), after it said the technology behemoth broke digital antitrust regulations by setting up Google Play and its ubiquitous search engine to corral consumers toward its own services and apps to the detriment of competitors. Google Maps will change the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America

Google is complying with President Donald Trump's executive action that renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Soon, the name change will appear on Google Maps. In a post on X, Google explained that it has a "longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources." The name will be tweaked when the Geographic Names Information System, a government database of names and location data, is updated.
