Australia backs Palestinians’ ‘permanent sovereignty’ at UN in significant foreign policy shift

Australia has voted to recognise Palestinians' "permanent sovereignty" over their natural resources in a significant foreign policy shift that breaks with the US and Israel. Votes in favour of two United Nations draft resolutions on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT) are the latest in a series of more pro-Palestinian votes Australia has taken at the global body, angering local pro-Israel groups but draw praise from Palestinian advocates. The draft resolution in the UN's Second Committee recognised the "permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources". Votes on both resolutions will now go to the UN's General Assembly. (AP Photo/Julia Ni...

Israeli strike on school-turned-shelter in Gaza kills 27, two UN peacekeepers hurt in Lebanon

An Israeli strike on a school sheltering the displaced in the Gaza Strip has killed at least 27 people, Palestinian medical officials say. The Israeli military said its Thursday strike targeted militants hiding among civilians, without providing evidence. Israel has continued to strike at what it says are militant targets across the Palestinian enclave even as attention has shifted to its war against Hezbollah in Lebanon and rising tensions with Iran. The military launched a large-scale air and ground operation against Hamas in northern Gaza earlier this week. In a separate development, the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon said an Israeli tank fired on its headquarters in the town of Naqoura, hitting an observation tower and wounding two peacekeepers, who we...

US and Philippine forces sink a ship during largescale drills in the disputed South China Sea

US and Philippine forces, backed by an Australian air force surveillance aircraft, have unleashed a barrage of high-precision rockets, artillery fire and airstrikes and sank a mock enemy ship as part of largescale war drills in and near the disputed South China Sea that have antagonised Beijing. Military officials and diplomats from several countries watched the display of firepower from a hilltop along a sandy coast in Laoag City in Ilocos Norte, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr's northern home province. More than 16,000 military personnel from the United States and the Philippines, along with a few hundred Australian troops and military observers from 14 countries, were participating in annual combat-readiness drills called Balikatan, Tagalog for shoulder-to-shoulder....
Defence spending gets $50 billion boost over next decade

Defence spending gets $50 billion boost over next decade

The Australian government will invest an extra $50.3 billion into defence over the next decade as part of a long-awaited revamp of the nation's armed forces strategy. The funding boost comes following last year's Defence Strategic Review, which argued Australia needed to modernise its current military structure it said was designed for a "bygone era". "The optimistic assumptions that guided defence planning after the end of the Cold War are long gone," Defence Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles said when announcing the funding boost and the National Defence Strategy this afternoon. Hungarian leader says Donald Trump will end the war in Ukraine by not giving ‘a penny’

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said Donald Trump would effectively end the war in Ukraine by cutting off funding to Kyiv, should the former United States president return to power in November. "He (Trump) has a very clear vision," Orban said in an interview to Hungarian broadcaster M1 broadcast on Sunday. "He says the following: first, he will not give a single penny for the Russo-Ukrainian war. That's why the war will end, because it's obvious that Ukraine cannot stand on its own two feet." Then-US. president Donald Trump welcomes Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to the White House in Washington, in May, 2019. The pair have long opposed providing Wesern military aid to Ukraine.
