German cabinet backs voluntary military service, opening door to conscription

Christian Mang/Getty Images The government wants an 80,000 increase in soldier numbers by 80,000 by the early 2030s Germany's cabinet has passed a draft bill which will introduce voluntary military service. The bill could also lead to conscription if more troops are needed. It's part of a move to boost German national defences, following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Compulsory military service in Germany was ended in 2011 under then-Chancellor Angela Merkel. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has made boosting Germany's military a priority given the threat from Russia and said "we are now back on the path to a military service army". He summed up his thinking earlier this year saying: "We want to be able to defend ourselves so that we don't have to defend our...

NATO warplanes scrambled amid Russian drone attacks on Ukraine

NATO fighter jets have been sent to Romania's border after a Russian drone strike landed dangerously close to its territory. The two German warplanes were deployed in the early hours of Wednesday to secure Romanian airspace when Russia launched nearly 93 drones and two ballistic missiles against Ukraine. Ukrainian officials said the Russian attacks targeted industrial sites in the city of Izmail on the Danube river, at the border with Romania - which is a NATO member. UN nuclear watchdog chief says Iran could again begin enriching uranium in ‘matter of months’

The head of the United Nation's nuclear watchdog says US strikes on Iran fell short of causing total damage to its nuclear program and that Tehran could restart enriching uranium "in a matter of months", contradicting US President Donald Trump's claims the US set Tehran's ambitions back by decades. Rafael Grossi's comments appear to support an early assessment from the Pentagon's Defence Intelligence Agency, first reported on by CNN, which suggests the US' strikes on key Iranian nuclear sites last week did not destroy the core components of its nuclear program, and likely only set it back by months. While the final military and intelligence assessment has yet to come, Trump has repeatedly claimed to have "completely and totally obliterated" Tehran's nuclear program. IA...

Trump calls for ceasefire deal in war in Gaza as signs of progress emerge

US President Donald Trump has urged progress in ceasefire talks in the 20-month war in Gaza, as Israel and Hamas appeared to move closer to an agreement. A top adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Ron Dermer, was set to travel to Washington this week for talks on a ceasefire, an Israeli official said, and plans were being made for Netanyahu to travel there in the coming weeks, a sign there may be movement on a deal. The official declined to discuss the visit's focus and spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss plans that had not been finalised. Trump narrows focus on ‘killing America’s enemies’ in speech to graduate cadets

US President Donald Trump used the first service academy commencement address of his second term on Saturday (local time) to laud graduating West Point cadets for their accomplishments and career choice while also veering sharply into a campaign-style recitation of political boasts and long-held grievances. "In a few moments, you'll become graduates of the most elite and storied military academy in human history," Trump said at the ceremony at Michie Stadium. "And you will become officers of the greatest and most powerful army the world has ever known. And I know, because I rebuilt that army, and I rebuilt the military. And we rebuilt it like nobody has ever rebuilt it before in my first term." President Donald Trump salutes during the United States Military Academy co...

Zelenskyy says Russia trying to create ‘impression of a ceasefire’ as attacks continue

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of creating a false appearance of honouring an Easter ceasefire, saying Moscow continued to launch attacks overnight after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a unilateral temporary truce in Ukraine. Despite Putin's declaration of an Easter ceasefire on Saturday, Zelenskyy said Sunday morning that Ukrainian forces had recorded 59 instances of Russian shelling and five assaults by units across various areas along the front line, as well as dozens of drone strikes. "As of Easter morning, we can say that the Russian army is trying to create a general impression of a ceasefire, but in some places, it does not abandon individual attempts to advance and inflict losses on Ukraine," Zelenskyy said in a post on X. ...
