Trump threats against Greenland pose new, potentially unprecedented challenge to NATO

US President Donald Trump's latest threats against Greenland pose a new and potentially unprecedented challenge to NATO, perhaps even an existential one, for an alliance focused on external threats that could now face an armed confrontation involving its most powerful member. The White House says the administration is weighing "options" that could include military action to take control of the strategically located and mineral-rich island, which is a semi-autonomous region that is part of NATO ally Denmark. Trump's renewed interest in Greenland could put at risk the entire future of NATO, which was founded in 1949 to counter the threat to European security posed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Nato spending pledge is Trump’s biggest foreign policy success, Rutte tells BBC

EPA Nato countries' pledge to spend 5% of their economic output on defence is Donald Trump's "biggest foreign policy success," the alliance's chief has said. In an interview with the BBC, Mark Rutte said it was thanks to Donald Trump that Nato was "stronger than it ever was", adding that Trump "is good news for collective defence, for Nato and for Ukraine". The US leader has harshly criticised European allies for spending very little on defence - even threatening to withdraw US protection if they fail to do so. The Nato chief has warned that Russia could attack allies within the next five years. Russia's President Vladimir Putin dismissed such talk as "hysteria" on Wednesday. "I've said it repeatedly - it's a lie, nonsense, pure nonsense, about some imaginary Russian t...

Trump demands NATO countries stop buying Russian oil

US President Donald Trump says he believes the Russia-Ukraine war would end if all NATO countries stopped buying oil from Russia and placed tariffs on China of 50 per cent to 100 per cent for its purchases of Russian petroleum. Trump posted on his social media site that NATO's commitment to winning the war "has been far less" than 100 per cent and the purchase of Russian oil by some members of the alliance is "shocking." As if speaking with NATO members, he said on Saturday: "It greatly weakens your negotiating position, and bargaining power, over Russia". NATO warplanes scrambled amid Russian drone attacks on Ukraine

NATO fighter jets have been sent to Romania's border after a Russian drone strike landed dangerously close to its territory. The two German warplanes were deployed in the early hours of Wednesday to secure Romanian airspace when Russia launched nearly 93 drones and two ballistic missiles against Ukraine. Ukrainian officials said the Russian attacks targeted industrial sites in the city of Izmail on the Danube river, at the border with Romania - which is a NATO member. Russia may attack Nato in next four years, German defence chief warns

Members of the Western alliance Nato need to prepare for a possible attack from Russia within the next four years, according to Germany's chief of defence. General Carsten Breuer told the BBC that Russia was producing hundreds of tanks a year, many of which could be used for an attack on Nato Baltic state members by 2029 or even earlier. He also insisted that Nato, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, remains unified over the war in Ukraine, despite differences of opinion expressed recently by both Hungary and Slovakia. Gen Breuer was speaking on the sidelines of the Shangri-la Dialogue, a defence summit in Singapore organised by the think tank International Institute of Strategic Studies. His comments come weeks ahead of a summit of Nato nations at The Hague where they are ...

Nato must switch to a wartime mindset, warns secretary general

The head of Nato has said it is time to "shift to a wartime mindset", as he warned the military alliance's members were not spending enough to prepare for the threat of a future conflict with Russia. Secretary general Mark Rutte said Moscow was "preparing for long-term confrontation with Ukraine and with us", describing the current security situation as the worst in his lifetime. "We are not ready for what is coming our way in four to five years," he said in his first major speech since becoming secretary general in October, urging members to "turbocharge" their defence spending. His comments come weeks before president-elect Donald Trump takes office, having previously suggested the US would not protect Nato allies that were failing to spend enough on defence. Reut...
