Denmark still has ‘fundamental disagreement’ with Donald Trump over Greenland after high-stakes meeting

Danish officials claim a "fundamental disagreement" over Greenland remains with President Donald Trump after highly anticipated talks with the vice president and secretary of state. It comes as Trump insisted anything less than total US control of the island would be "unacceptable". The two sides, however, agreed to create a working group to discuss ways to work through differences as Trump continues to call for a US takeover of the semi-autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark. US military action in Venezuela is seen as both a blessing and a curse for Russia’s Putin

The lightning US operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro can be seen as both a benefit and a burden for Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose forces botched an attempt to capture Ukraine's capital and topple its leader at the start of Moscow's invasion nearly four years ago. The ouster of Maduro highlights another Kremlin failure to support an ally, following the downfall of Syria's former President Bashar Assad in 2024 and last year's US and Israeli attacks on Iran. With the US determined to establish control over Venezuela, Russia stands to lose a strategic foothold in the Western Hemisphere, along with billions of dollars invested in its oil industry. Trump threats against Greenland pose new, potentially unprecedented challenge to NATO

US President Donald Trump's latest threats against Greenland pose a new and potentially unprecedented challenge to NATO, perhaps even an existential one, for an alliance focused on external threats that could now face an armed confrontation involving its most powerful member. The White House says the administration is weighing "options" that could include military action to take control of the strategically located and mineral-rich island, which is a semi-autonomous region that is part of NATO ally Denmark. Trump's renewed interest in Greenland could put at risk the entire future of NATO, which was founded in 1949 to counter the threat to European security posed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Houses covered by snow are seen on the coast of a sea inlet of Nuuk, Gr...

Nato spending pledge is Trump’s biggest foreign policy success, Rutte tells BBC

EPA Nato countries' pledge to spend 5% of their economic output on defence is Donald Trump's "biggest foreign policy success," the alliance's chief has said. In an interview with the BBC, Mark Rutte said it was thanks to Donald Trump that Nato was "stronger than it ever was", adding that Trump "is good news for collective defence, for Nato and for Ukraine". The US leader has harshly criticised European allies for spending very little on defence - even threatening to withdraw US protection if they fail to do so. The Nato chief has warned that Russia could attack allies within the next five years. Russia's President Vladimir Putin dismissed such talk as "hysteria" on Wednesday. "I've said it repeatedly - it's a lie, nonsense, pure nonsense, about some imaginary Russian t...

Trump demands NATO countries stop buying Russian oil

US President Donald Trump says he believes the Russia-Ukraine war would end if all NATO countries stopped buying oil from Russia and placed tariffs on China of 50 per cent to 100 per cent for its purchases of Russian petroleum. Trump posted on his social media site that NATO's commitment to winning the war "has been far less" than 100 per cent and the purchase of Russian oil by some members of the alliance is "shocking." As if speaking with NATO members, he said on Saturday: "It greatly weakens your negotiating position, and bargaining power, over Russia". NATO warplanes scrambled amid Russian drone attacks on Ukraine

NATO fighter jets have been sent to Romania's border after a Russian drone strike landed dangerously close to its territory. The two German warplanes were deployed in the early hours of Wednesday to secure Romanian airspace when Russia launched nearly 93 drones and two ballistic missiles against Ukraine. Ukrainian officials said the Russian attacks targeted industrial sites in the city of Izmail on the Danube river, at the border with Romania - which is a NATO member.
