(Eddie Jim) Battin defeated Kew MP Jess Wilson and Mornington MP Chris Crewther, who both threw their hats in the ring for the top job. Today's meeting also included a motion to readmit Deeming to the party, a week after a similar motion failed in a 14-all vote deadlock. Pesutto used his vote last week to bre...

Canada’s finance minister resigns as unpopular Trudeau faces biggest test of his political career

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faces the biggest test of his political career after Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, long one of his most powerful and loyal ministers, announced Monday that she was resigning from the Cabinet. The stunning move raised questions about how much longer the prime minister of nearly 10 years can stay on as his administration scrambles to deal with incoming US President-elect Donald Trump. Trudeau's popularity has plummeted due to concerns about inflation and immigration. Opposition leader Jagmeet Singh, whose party Trudeau's ruling Liberals have relied upon to stay in power, called on Trudeau to resign. The main opposition Conservatives demanded an election. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accompanied by Canada's Mini...

Donald Trump named Time’s Person of the Year and rings New York Stock Exchange opening bell

US President-elect Donald Trump rang the opening bell on Thursday at the New York Stock Exchange after being recognised for the second time by Time magazine as its person of the year. The honours for the businessman-turned-politician are a measure of Trump's remarkable comeback from an ostracised former president who refused to accept his election loss four years ago to a president-elect who won the White House decisively in November. Before he rang the opening bell at 9.30am (1.30am on Friday AEDT), a first for him, Trump spoke at the exchange and called it "a tremendous honour". Donald Trump named Time's 2024 Person of the Year. (X) "Time magazine, getting this honour for the second time, I think I like it better this time actually," he said. Trump, acc...

Biden commutes about 1500 sentences, pardons 39 people in biggest single-day act of clemency

US President Joe Biden is commuting the sentences of about 1500 people who were released from prison and placed on home confinement during the coronavirus pandemic and is pardoning 39 Americans convicted of nonviolent crimes. It's the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history. The commutations announced on Thursday are for people who have served out home confinement sentences for at least one year after they were released. Prisons were uniquely bad for spreading the virus and some inmates were released in part to stop the spread. At one point, one in five prisoners had COVID-19, according to a tally kept by The Associated Press. Biden said he would be taking more steps in the weeks ahead and would continue to review clemency petitions. The second largest single-day a...

Elon Musk publicised the names of government employees he wants to cut. It’s terrifying federal workers

When President-elect Donald Trump said Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy would recommend major cuts to the federal government in his administration, many public employees knew that their jobs could be on the line. Now they have a new fear: becoming the personal targets of the world's richest man – and his legions of followers. Last week, in the midst of the flurry of his daily missives, Musk reposted two X posts that revealed the names and titles of people holding four relatively obscure climate-related government positions.
