Ukraine drone attack causes fire at Sochi oil depot, Russia says

Mayor Andrei Proshunin Sochi Mayor Andrei Proshunin posted a photo on Sunday afternoon, saying the blaze was extinguished A massive oil depot fire near Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi has been blamed by Moscow on an overnight Ukrainian drone attack. Krasnodar region Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said drone debris hit a fuel tank and 127 firefighters were on Sunday tackling the blaze, which was later put out. The airport near Sochi - the venue of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games - briefly suspended flights. Meanwhile, Russia again bombed a key bridge in Ukraine's southern city of Kherson, killing one man, local officials said. In nearby Mykolaiv, seven people were injured and several homes destroyed. Ukraine earlier reported seven deaths in Saturday's Russian attacks in...

Russian volcano erupts for first time in more than 500 years

A volcano in far eastern Russia has erupted for the first time in more than 500 years, which experts say may be linked to last week's massive earthquake. The Krasheninnikov Volcano in Kamchatka threw up an ash plume up to six kilometres (3.7 miles) high overnight. There are no threats to populated areas, Russia's emergency ministry said. Hours later, another large earthquake in Russia led to tsunami warnings in three areas of the peninsula. Both events may be connected to a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake which hit a similar area last week, which caused tsunami warnings as far away as French Polynesia and Chile. Institute of Volcanology and Seismology Russian news agency RIA published pictures of the huge ash plume above the Krasheninnikov Volcano, following the eru...

Obama issues rare statement responding to Trump’s ‘ridiculous’ claim

Barack Obama has issued a statement rejecting claims made by Donald Trump that Russia successfully manipulated votes in the 2016 US Election. Obama acknowledged Russia potentially may have attempted to influence the election, but it did not successfully affect the outcome. "Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes," Obama's office said in a statement. He claimed that documents reviewed by the Director of National...

Russia may attack Nato in next four years, German defence chief warns

Members of the Western alliance Nato need to prepare for a possible attack from Russia within the next four years, according to Germany's chief of defence. General Carsten Breuer told the BBC that Russia was producing hundreds of tanks a year, many of which could be used for an attack on Nato Baltic state members by 2029 or even earlier. He also insisted that Nato, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, remains unified over the war in Ukraine, despite differences of opinion expressed recently by both Hungary and Slovakia. Gen Breuer was speaking on the sidelines of the Shangri-la Dialogue, a defence summit in Singapore organised by the think tank International Institute of Strategic Studies. His comments come weeks ahead of a summit of Nato nations at The Hague where they are ...

Ukraine drones strike bombers during major attack in Russia

Ukraine says it completed its biggest long-range attack of the war with Russia on Sunday, after using smuggled drones to launch a series of major strikes on 40 Russian warplanes at four military bases. President Volodymyr Zelensky said 117 drones were used in the so-called "Spider's Web" operation by the SBU security service, striking "34% of [Russia's] strategic cruise missile carriers". SBU sources earlier told BBC News it took a year-and-a-half to organise the strikes, which involved drones hidden in wooden mobile cabins, with remotely operated roofs on trucks, brought near the airbases and then fired "at the right time". Russia confirmed Ukrainian attacks in five regions calling them a "terrorist act". Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities reported a massive overnight drone and ...

Russia-Ukraine peace talks end after less than 2 hours with deal to swap POWs

The first direct Russia-Ukraine peace talks since the early weeks of Moscow's 2022 invasion ended after less than two hours on Friday, and while both sides agreed on a large prisoner swap, they clearly remained far apart on key conditions for ending the fighting. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he discussed the results of the talks with US President Donald Trump and the leaders of France, Germany, the UK and Poland. In a post on X from a European leadership meeting in Albania, he urged "tough sanctions" against Moscow if it rejects "a full and unconditional ceasefire and an end to killings". At the brief Istanbul talks, Kyiv and Moscow agreed to exchange 1000 prisoners of war each, according to the heads of both delegations, in what would be their biggest such swap...
