US plans social media check on Australians and other overseas visitors

Australians are among some visitors to the US who may soon have to provide their social media history from the prior five years to enter the country, according to a new Trump administration proposal. The proposal, posted on the Federal Register by US Customs and Border Protection, suggests travellers coming from countries that are part of a visa waiver program would need to give additional personal information as part of an electronic application. The requirement would be for travellers using the Electronic System for Travel Authorization, or ESTA, as part of a visa waiver program for citizens from 42 countries, including Australia, the UK, New Zealand, Japan, Israel and Qatar, as well as many other European countries. Overseas travellers to the US, including Australia...

Trump once called for ‘aggressive action’ against TikTok. Now the White House has joined the app

The White House has officially joined TikTok, despite US President Donald Trump previously calling for "aggressive action" against the social media platform. He even signed an executive order in 2020, during his first term in the Oval Office, suggesting the Chinese-owned app was a threat to national security. But Trump's attitude changed around the time of the 2024 Presidential election, when he and former Vice President Kamala Harris both campaigned extensively on the platform. Elon Musk’s AI chatbot is suddenly posting antisemitic tropes

Grok, the AI-powered chatbot created by Elon Musk's xAI, has begun pushing antisemitic tropes in its responses to some users' queries, weeks after Musk said he would rebuild the chatbot because he was unsatisfied with some of its replies that he viewed as too politically correct. On Tuesday, Grok connected several antisemitic tropes to an X account with a name it identified as being "Ashkenazi Jewish" that caused controversy with offensive comments posted online about the victims of the recent Texas floods. "[T]hat surname? Every damn time," Grok said in response to a user who asked the bot to identify a woman in an unrelated image. AI chatbot Grok has posted antisemitic material on X. Trump says there’s a TikTok buyer that he’ll reveal in ‘about two weeks’

President Donald Trump said in an interview there is a "buyer for TikTok," teasing an announcement to come in "about two weeks." "We have a buyer for TikTok by the way. I think I'll need probably China approval, and I think President Xi will probably do it," the president said on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo." Asked who the buyer is going to be, Trump said, "I'll tell you in about two weeks." "It's a group of very wealthy people," the president added. Donald Trump says a buyer for TikTok may be finalised soon. But thanks to Presi...

Irish privacy watchdog investigates Elon Musk’s X’s use of personal data to train Grok AI chatbot

Ireland's data privacy watchdog said on Friday it's investigating Elon Musk's social media platform X over its use of personal data to train his artificial intelligence chatbot Grok. The Data Protection Commission said it has opened an inquiry into "the processing of personal data comprised in publicly-accessible posts" that European users posted on X. "The purpose of this inquiry is to determine whether this personal data was lawfully processed in order to train the Grok LLMs" under the bloc's data privacy law, the commission said in a statement posted online. Why the Harris campaign has spent $16 million on a Facebook page with 1000 followers

As Donald Trump and Kamala Harris feverishly chase undecided voters in the final stretch of the US presidential campaign, millions of people in battleground states are being served ads on Facebook and Instagram from an obscure page calling itself "The Daily Scroll." The social media ads, which are adorned with a nondescript logo resembling a pair of checkmarks, have promoted news articles from mainstream outlets including CNN, ABC and NBC, showing easing US inflation, cheaper insulin prices, and the consequences of state abortion bans. But the ads on Meta-owned platforms aren't being paid for by any news outlet — they're a product of Harris' presidential campaign, which has spent heavily on social media platforms and embraced influencers to power her online efforts against Trum...
