Why is Trump trying to deploy the National Guard to US cities?

President Donald Trump's deployment of the National Guard into several US cities has drawn a round of legal challenges by state and local officials. Trump argues the use of federal troops is necessary to quell violence in Democratic-controlled cities, crack down on crime and support his deportation initiatives. But several Democratic governors have pushed back, saying the deployments are unnecessary and risk escalating tensions. Illinois filed a lawsuit on Monday asking a judge to block the deployment of troops to Chicago, while a federal judge on Sunday temporarily blocked the deployment of National Guard members from Texas and California to Portland, Oregon. ...

Trump’s use of National Guard in Los Angeles was illegal, judge rules

A federal judge in California has ruled that the way President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles this summer was illegal. The ruling comes as Trump seeks to use National Guard troops in order to crack down on crime in other US cities and support immigration enforcement. US District Judge Charles Breyer said Trump violated the Posse Comitatus Act, which limits the power of the federal government to use military force for domestic matters. White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said that "a rogue judge is trying to usurp the authority of the Commander-in-Chief to protect American cities from violence and destruction". The ruling is on hold until 12 September. The Trump administration will likely appeal against the ruling. "The President is committed to prote...

RFK Jr ‘endangering’ Americans, say former CDC bosses

Nine former leaders of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have spoken out against Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, publishing an open letter that criticises his policies - including restricting vaccines, pulling funding for research, and firing thousands of healthcare workers. They also wrote in an open letter that last week's removal of Dr Susan Monarez as CDC director - which was followed by a string of resignations in protest - added fuel to a "raging fire". Kennedy, meanwhile, said on Tuesday that the CDC had strayed from its "core mission". He added that public trust in the organization had been hurt by "bureaucratic inertia, politicized science and mission creep". In their open letter in the New York Times, the former health leaders said the s...

Five House Republicans stall Trump’s ‘big, beautiful’ tax bill

Getty Images A budget bill, long touted by Donald Trump as the "big, beautiful bill" hit a roadblock on Friday when lawmakers from the president's own party voted against it in congress. Five Republicans joined all Democrats in delivering a stunning setback to President Trump's domestic agenda, demanding deeper budget cuts. Trump, who has muscled through close votes several times this year, urged lawmakers to unite behind the legislation. "We don't need 'GRANDSTANDERS' in the Republican Party. STOP TALKING, AND GET IT DONE!," he posted on Truth Social. The bill's chances of success are not hopeless, but its failure gives the Trump administration its first legislative bruise of the year. Support for the bill among Republicans varies. Some hard-liners want to see the bud...

Trump picks investment banker Warren Stephens as UK ambassador

President-elect Donald Trump has nominated businessman Warren Stephens to serve as America’s ambassador to the United Kingdom. “Warren has always dreamed of serving the United States full time,” Trump said in a statement on Truth Social. “I am thrilled that he will now have that opportunity as the top diplomat, representing the USA to one of America’s most cherished and beloved allies.” Stephens, who is CEO of private investment bank Stephens Inc, donated millions to Trump’s re-election campaign this year. If his nomination is successful, Stephens will help to maintain the so-called “special relationship” between the US and the UK. The role of US ambassador to the UK is one of the most coveted diplomatic positions, and presidents have been known to bestow the role to prominent ...

Kamala Harris’s pain-free campaign faces first crunch moment

In American politics it’s customary to suggest that most voters don’t start paying attention to the presidential election until after the Labor Day holiday weekend. Well, that occasion - seen here as the unofficial end of summer - has now been and gone. And as a noticeable chill is felt in the air, many more voters will start to take note of politics. That includes the crucial swing voters in a handful of closely contested states who will ultimately decide the race for the White House. Right on cue, as these eyes start to focus on the election, we have a presidential debate that will see Donald Trump and Kamala Harris go head-to-head for the first time. In fact, it will be the first time the two candidates have ever met in person. The high-stakes event in Philadelphia on Tuesday night ...
