How Charlie Kirk changed conservative media – and US politics

Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed today, pioneered a new model for conservative political advocacy, merging multi-platform media commentary with in-person gatherings and get-out-the-vote drives. Kirk, 31, was a hugely successful political field organiser, TikTok influencer, radio host, nonprofit leader and public speaker all rolled up in one telegenic figure. One minute, Kirk would be on Fox News promoting his friend President Donald Trump's agenda; the next, he would be on X or Instagram, inviting young people to start conservative groups at their high schools and college campuses. Trump once called for ‘aggressive action’ against TikTok. Now the White House has joined the app

The White House has officially joined TikTok, despite US President Donald Trump previously calling for "aggressive action" against the social media platform. He even signed an executive order in 2020, during his first term in the Oval Office, suggesting the Chinese-owned app was a threat to national security. But Trump's attitude changed around the time of the 2024 Presidential election, when he and former Vice President Kamala Harris both campaigned extensively on the platform. Texas Democrats refuse police escort, blocked from leaving state house

Several Texas state House Democrats ripped up the written agreements that allowed them to leave the chamber with a police escort and returned to the House floor. The politicians will spend the night on the House floor with state Rep. Nicole Collier, who has stayed in the chamber for more than 24 hours after declining to sign the "permission slip" to leave. House Republicans announced the requirement on Monday when Democrats, who faced civil arrest warrants for leaving the state during a special session, returned from their 15-day quorum break. Rep. Hegseth reposts video on social media featuring pastors saying women shouldn’t be allowed to vote

The man who oversees the America's military reposted a video about a Christian nationalist church that included various pastors saying women should no longer be allowed to vote. The extraordinary repost on X from Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, made Thursday night, illustrates his deep and personal connection to a Christian nationalist pastor with extreme views on the role of religion and women. In the post, Hegseth commented on an almost seven-minute-long report by CNN examining Doug Wilson, cofounder of the Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches, or CREC. Trump says he’ll meet Putin in Alaska next week

President Donald Trump said he'll be meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin next Friday in Alaska after earlier in the day previewing terms of a potential peace deal to end the war in Ukraine that could include "some swapping of territories." "The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska. "Further details to follow," Trump posted on Truth Social Friday evening. US officials, including Trump, have briefed European leaders and Ukrainian officials on a plan offered by Putin to halt the war in Ukraine in exchange for significant territorial concessions by Kyiv, according to Western officials briefed on the matter....

There is a larger problem for Trump in the Epstein chaos

Analysis: Ezra Klein begins one of his recent podcasts by telling a joke that has been making the rounds. Basically, a conspiracy theorist dies and ascends to heaven. God is there to greet him and explains that as part of the celestial welcome, he will answer any question the man has, writes American journalist and commentator Fareed Zakaria "Please, I must know the answer to this one," the man says, "who killed John F. Kennedy?" God answers instantly, "That's easy: Lee Harvey Oswald." Shocked, the man murmurs, "This goes higher than I had thought!" This is the dilemma in which Donald Trump finds himself. Whatever he does to deflect and distract from the Jeffrey Epstein morass only deepens the suspicions — including those about the two men's relationship. President Donald Tr...
