FBI now says driver responsible for deadly New Orleans rampage acted alone as Bourbon Street re-opens

The US Army veteran who drove a ute into a crowd of New Year's revellers acted alone, the FBI said on Thursday, reversing its position from a day earlier that he likely worked with others in carrying out the deadly attack, which officials say was an act of terrorism inspired by the Islamic State (IS) group. The FBI also revealled that the driver, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a US citizen from Texas, posted five videos on his Facebook account in the hours before the attack in which he aligned himself with IS and told viewers that he had joined the militant group before last summer. "This was an act of terrorism. It was premeditated and an evil act," said Christopher Raia, the deputy assistant director of the FBI's counterterrorism division. Turo-rented cars were involved in two deadly incidents this New Year’s. Here’s what we know

Two deadly incidents on New Year's Day — an attack being investigated as an act of terrorism in New Orleans and an explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck in Las Vegas - both involved vehicles that were rented on Turo, a peer-to-peer car sharing company. Early Wednesday, 42-year-old Army veteran Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar rammed a pickup truck into a crowd in New Orleans' famed French Quarter — killing 14 people who were celebrating the New Year. Police fatally shot Jabbar in a following firefight. Just hours after, outside of President-elect Donald Trump's hotel in Las Vegas, a Tesla Cybertruck packed with explosives also burst into flames. The person inside, identified as active-duty US Army Green Beret Matthew Livelsberger, died. Officials later said he suffered a gunshot wound to the...

Canada’s finance minister resigns as unpopular Trudeau faces biggest test of his political career

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faces the biggest test of his political career after Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, long one of his most powerful and loyal ministers, announced Monday that she was resigning from the Cabinet. The stunning move raised questions about how much longer the prime minister of nearly 10 years can stay on as his administration scrambles to deal with incoming US President-elect Donald Trump. Trudeau's popularity has plummeted due to concerns about inflation and immigration. Opposition leader Jagmeet Singh, whose party Trudeau's ruling Liberals have relied upon to stay in power, called on Trudeau to resign. The main opposition Conservatives demanded an election. Australian ambassador to return to Kyiv at critical point in Russia’s war on Ukraine

Australia's ambassador will return to Kyiv next month, almost three years after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine prompted the embassy's evacuation. The announcement by Foreign Minister Penny Wong on her first visit to Ukraine since the unprovoked assault, followed repeated calls from Ukraine, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to relocate Canberra's diplomatic representatives from Poland. The visit and reopening came at what Wong called "such an important time for your country and for the future of your people", amid huge uncertainty about what impact US President-elect Donald Trump will have on the war. Donald Trump named Time’s Person of the Year and rings New York Stock Exchange opening bell

US President-elect Donald Trump rang the opening bell on Thursday at the New York Stock Exchange after being recognised for the second time by Time magazine as its person of the year. The honours for the businessman-turned-politician are a measure of Trump's remarkable comeback from an ostracised former president who refused to accept his election loss four years ago to a president-elect who won the White House decisively in November. Before he rang the opening bell at 9.30am (1.30am on Friday AEDT), a first for him, Trump spoke at the exchange and called it "a tremendous honour". Donald Trump named Time's 2024 Person of the Year. Biden commutes about 1500 sentences, pardons 39 people in biggest single-day act of clemency

US President Joe Biden is commuting the sentences of about 1500 people who were released from prison and placed on home confinement during the coronavirus pandemic and is pardoning 39 Americans convicted of nonviolent crimes. It's the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history. The commutations announced on Thursday are for people who have served out home confinement sentences for at least one year after they were released. Prisons were uniquely bad for spreading the virus and some inmates were released in part to stop the spread. At one point, one in five prisoners had COVID-19, according to a tally kept by The Associated Press. Biden said he would be taking more steps in the weeks ahead and would continue to review clemency petitions. The second largest single-day a...
