Federal judge blocks Elon Musk’s DOGE access to critical Treasury payment system

A federal judge, citing a risk of "irreparable harm", has temporarily restricted Elon Musk's government efficiency team from accessing a critical Treasury Department payment system. The judge's order, issued early on Saturday, temporarily halts access to a sensitive payment system that distributes Americans' tax returns, Social Security benefits, disability payments and federal employees' salaries. US District Judge Paul Engelmayer ordered the destruction of any downloaded information from the payment system by anyone given access to it since January 20, citing "the risk that the new policy presents of the disclosure of sensitive and confidential information and the heightened risk that the systems in question will be more vulnerable than before to hacking". The judge'...

Google Maps will change the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America

Google is complying with President Donald Trump's executive action that renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Soon, the name change will appear on Google Maps. In a post on X, Google explained that it has a "longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources." The name will be tweaked when the Geographic Names Information System, a government database of names and location data, is updated. Former President Barack Obama renamed the Alaska landmark to Denali in 2015 as a nod to the region's native population. Both changes stem...

Investigators probe fatal Alaska plane crash as crews push to recover wreckage before inclement weather

Recovery crews worked amid freezing temperatures and slushy sea ice Friday to recover the remaining victims aboard a regional airline flight that crashed off the coast of western Alaska. The small commuter aircraft carrying nine passengers and one pilot took off from Unalakleet on Thursday afternoon before disappearing. The plane was later found on Friday about 54 kilometres southeast of Nome, the flight's intended destination, according to the US Coast Guard. All 10 on board were declared dead. What do Trump’s executive orders say on tariffs and how would they work?

With a trio of executive orders, US President Donald Trump has almost instantly thrown the world economy and his own goal of cutting inflation into turmoil. His tariffs against Canada and Mexico in order to stop illegal immigration and the illicit fentanyl trade led to retaliatory taxes by both countries on US imports. He placed an additional 10 per cent tariff on imports from China with the stated goal of stopping the production of fentanyl. A trade war is looming between the US, Canada, and Mexico. (AP) But on a deeper level, Trump suddenly hit the US economy with tax increases that, if sustained, could total more than US$1 trillion ($1.61 trillion) in 10 years. He did so without congressional approval and by his own acknowledgement at the perilous chance of ...

Marco Rubio says Panama must reduce Chinese influence around the canal or face possible US action

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino on Sunday that the Central American ally must immediately reduce Chinese influence over the Panama Canal area or face potential retaliation from the Trump administration. Rubio, on his first foreign trip as America's top diplomat, held face-to-face talks with Mulino, who has resisted pressure from the new US government over Panama's management of a waterway that is vital to global trade. Mulino told reporters after the meeting that Rubio made "no real threat of retaking the canal or the use of force." Panama's President Jose Mulino, left, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Beyoncé wins elusive album of the year Grammy as Kendrick Lamar cleans up with diss track

Beyoncé has won album of the year for Cowboy Carter at the 2025 Grammys, delivering her — at last — the show's elusive top award. The superstar, who is both the most awarded and nominated artist in Grammys history, has been nominated in the category four times before and many feel she has been snubbed by its top honors. Members of the Los Angeles Fire Department presented Beyoncé with the trophy. "It's been many, many years," Beyoncé said in her speech. "I want to dedicate this to Ms Martell," she said, referencing Linda Martell, the performer who became the first Black woman to play the Grand Ole Opry. "We finally saw it happen, everyone," host Trevor Noah said, nodding to the long overdue achievement for one of music's transcendent artists. Beyoncé acc...
