The US government has reopened after a historic shutdown. What does that mean, exactly?

The US government has reopened after a historic 43-day shutdown that started during a federal funding dispute on October 1. Thousands of federal workers went without pay, travellers were stranded at airports, and people lined up at food banks for almost eight weeks. US Donald Trump has signed off on legislation that resumed funding after a group of moderate Democrats caved and began the process to end the shutdown. In case you need a refresher, this is what that means. The US government was shut down for the first time in more than six years in early October. (AP) What is a government shutdown? US house passes bill to end historic government shutdown, sending measure to Trump

The House passed a bill to end the US's longest government shutdown, sending the measure to US President Donald Trump for his signature after a historic 43-day funding lapse that saw federal workers go without multiple paychecks, travellers stranded at airports and people lining up at food banks to get a meal for their families. House lawmakers made their long-awaited return to the nation's capital this week after nearly eight weeks away. Republicans used their slight majority to pass the bill with a mostly party-line vote of 222-209. House Democrats expressed great scepticism that the Senate effort would lead to a breakthrough. White House pressuring Republicans not to vote on releasing Epstein files

Top Trump administration officials have met with a key GOP lawmaker about an effort in the US House to force a vote on releasing Justice Department case files related to Jeffrey Epstein, according to multiple sources familiar with the meeting. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt acknowledged the meeting later Wednesday when asked about reporting that administration officials were huddling with GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert. "Doesn't that show the level of transparency when we are willing to sit down with members of Congress and address their concerns?" she told reporters at the press briefing. In spite of their reputations as Trump acolytes, Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene said they will vote to release the Epstein files. (AP) Leavitt added: "I'm not go...

Rumours growing about plot to overthrow UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has been forced to address reports that his rivals within the Labour Party are conspiring to replace him as leader, just two weeks before the government budget announcement, which could further worsen his already abysmal popularity. Several British media outlets quoted Starmer's allies on Tuesday as saying his position could be in imminent danger and pointing to Health Secretary Wes Streeting as a contender whose "ambition" was viewed with "particular suspicion." These same allies reported that Starmer would fight any challenge to his leadership. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has been forced to address rumours of a leadership challenge.
