New US poll deals major blow to Donald Trump

More Americans than ever before disapprove of US President Donald Trump's actions in office, according to a major new poll in the US. The fall of 2025 is not a replay of 2017, the year before the Democrats captured control of the US House in Trump's first term. The Democrats' five-point advantage among registered voters in the generic congressional ballot falls short of the 11-point edge they held in CNN polling a year before the 2018 midterms. Trump raises tariffs on Canadian goods over Reagan advert

Getty Images Trump posted about the tariff increase while flying to Malaysia on Saturday Donald Trump has said he is adding 10% to US tariffs on goods imported from Canada, after the province of Ontario aired an anti-tariff advertisement featuring Ronald Reagan. Calling the advert a "fraud", the US president lashed out at Canadian officials for not removing it ahead of the World Series baseball championship. Prime Minister Mark Carney said in response that Canada was ready "to continue to build on the progress we had been making" in trade talks, but added that it was developing trade relationships with other countries. Canada is the only G7 country to not reach a deal with the US since Trump began seeking to levy steep tariffs on goods from major trading partners. ...

Trump presides over Thai-Cambodia ‘peace deal’ – but what does it mean?

It was, as everyone knew it would be, all about US President Donald Trump. He literally towered over everyone else at the ceremony in Kuala Lumpur where Cambodia and Thailand signed their agreement. He gave the longest speech - and made the biggest claims. It was all superlatives. "This is a momentous day for South East Asia," Trump said. "A monumental step." Describing the two slightly sheepish-looking prime ministers who were about to sign the deal as "historic figures", Trump recalled at length how he got involved in the Thai-Cambodian border conflict while he was visiting his Turnberry golf course in Scotland in July. "And I said this is much more important than a round of golf... I could have had a lot of fun, but this is much more fun... saving people and saving countries." T...

US warship docks in Trinidad and Tobago, putting more pressure on Venezuela

A US warship has docked in Trinidad and Tobago's capital as the Trump administration boosts military pressure on neighbouring Venezuela and its President Nicolás Maduro. The arrival of the USS Gravely, a guided missile destroyer, in the capital of the Caribbean nation is in addition to the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R Ford, which is moving closer to Venezuela. Maduro criticised the movement of the carrier as an attempt by the US government to fabricate "a new eternal war" against his country. Kamala Harris hints at another presidential run: ‘I am not done’

Former US vice president Kamala Harris has hinted she could make another bid for the White House in an interview with the BBC, saying she would "possibly" be president one day and expressing confidence that America will see a woman in the Oval Office in the future. Harris marked her clearest indication yet that she might launch another presidential campaign in 2028, following her 2024 defeat to now-president Donald Trump, during an interview with BBC's Laura Kuenssberg which will air on Sunday. "I am not done," the former vice president said. US Supreme Court to consider law barring illegal drug users from owning guns

Getty Images The US Supreme Court will consider whether a law banning habitual illegal drug users from possessing guns violates the constitution. The Trump administration requested the review after a lower federal court in Texas ruled in favour of a man who was charged under the statute but argued it violated his constitutional right to possess a firearm. The government is seeking to preserve the law and restore the charge, arguing it is necessary to prevent individuals who pose "unique dangers to society" from owning guns. Hunter Biden, the son of former President Joe Biden was prosecuted and convicted for violating the same law in 2024. His father later pardoned him. The case involves a man named Ali Hemani, an alleged regular marijuana user who federal authorities...
