US forces are massing around Venezuela. What’s Trump’s next move?

US naval assets are massing off the coast of Venezuela, while President Donald Trump's administrations boasts about blowing up alleged "drug boats" departing those shores. Trump has hinted at carrying out "land strikes" in Venezuela and the White House earlier this year threatened to place 25 per cent import tariffs on any country that imported Venezuelan oil. What's going on in the South American country and why is Trump so angry about it? A satellite image captured on October 17 shows F-35 fighter jets at José Aponte de la Torre Airport in Puerto Rico. Kevin Rudd approached Donald Trump after a tense press conference moment. Here’s what happened

Donald Trump has reportedly "forgiven" Australian ambassador Kevin Rudd over the latter's old remarks labelling the US president a "traitor to the West". Rudd, a former prime minister and now Australia's ambassador to the US, was present this morning at the landmark meeting between Trump and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The meeting saw Trump and Albanese sign off on an $8.5 billion critical minerals deal, while warm behaviour was on show between the two leaders. Donald Trump and Anthony Albanese sign critical minerals deal in chummy first White House meeting

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has walked away from his long-awaited White House meeting with an $8.5 billion critical minerals deal and some effusive praise from US President Donald Trump. In a 35-minute sitdown, Trump referred to his visitor repeatedly as a friend and seemed to throw his support behind the AUKUS deal but declined to budge on Australia's tariff levels and took a swipe at former prime minister Kevin Rudd, who was also in the room. After multiple attempts to meet in person over the past months, Albanese and Trump shook hands outside the White House on Monday morning (early Tuesday AEDT) and sat down in the cabinet room surrounded by Trump's top secretaries. Israelis praise Trump at huge rally ahead of expected hostage release by Hamas in Gaza

Hundreds of thousands of people have held a rally in Tel Aviv, ahead of the expected release of Israeli hostages by Hamas. Addressing the crowds, US special envoy Steve Witkoff said the hostages "are coming home" and praised Donald Trump for making a Gaza ceasefire and hostage return deal possible. In Gaza, Palestinian officials said about 500,000 people had returned to northern Gaza - which lies in ruins - in the past two days, following the withdrawal of Israeli troops. Meanwhile Egypt confirmed it would host a summit on Monday to finalise an agreement aimed at ending the war. More than 20 leaders including Trump would attend the summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, an Egyptian presidential spokesperson said. French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer are c...

Ukraine and Russia’s intensifying energy war brings gas shortages and economic pain

Almost 900 miles from Ukraine's borders, a fire erupted at a Russian oil refinery on Saturday. The blaze – a result of a strike by Ukrainian long-range drones, according to sources in the country's security services – was the third at the facility in the last month alone. It was just the latest episode in an intensifying energy war between Ukraine and Russia. Video from the area around the Ufa refinery in Bashkortostan, a Russian region in the southern Ural Mountains, showed a column of dark smoke rising from the plant following the attack. The refinery is one of the country's largest. This was at least the fourth Ukrainian attack on Russian oil facilities in the last week, continuing a campaign that accelerated over the summer and has led to gasoline sho...

Trump warns Russia he may send Ukraine long-range Tomahawk missiles if Moscow doesn’t settle war soon

President Donald Trump on Sunday warned Russia that he may send Ukraine long-range Tomahawk missiles if Moscow doesn't settle its war there soon — suggesting that he could be ready to increase the pressure on Vladimir Putin's government using a key weapons system. "I might say, 'Look: if this war is not going to get settled, I'm going to send them Tomahawks," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he flew to Israel. "The Tomahawk is an incredible weapon, very offensive weapon. And honestly, Russia does not need that."
